Whether you believe he was rightly or wrongly convicted, this is still a sad story and a waste of talent. It is only with the help of prominent physicists, including Stephen Hawking, that he's receiving at least a slightly better condition.
Still, during what could be the most productive part of one's career, he will not be able to do what he is best at, physics.
